Chunky Headband / Earwarmer Crochet Pattern by Mel Paton (Mel P Designs).
Yarn: Lion Wool Ease Thick and Quick
Hook: 10mm
Headband
Row 1. Chain 37, turn, dc into 4th ch from hook, then dc into each stitch to end of chain, turn.
Row 2. Ch 3, dc in each st to end of row, turn.
Row 3. same as row 2. Finish off. Leave long end for sewing.
Sew ends of crochet piece together, finish off and weave in ends.
Flower
1. Crochet a magic circle. (If you don't know how to do this, click here for a tutorial). Ch 3 then dc 11 into magic circle. The ch 3 counts as a dc. Join with a ss to 3rd ch 3. (12 dc)
2. Petals: Ch 5, skip 1 dc, sc into next, repeat until you have 6 petals.
3. Finish off, leaving long end for sewing. Sew on button middle, then sew flower to headband over the top of the join of the headband for a neat finish.
There you go, a simple pattern that gives great results. If you've made a headband from this pattern, I would love to know how it turned out!

ReplyDeleteI think you would need more than 2 strands held together. Try 3 or 4 strands and see which works with the 10mm hook.

DeleteMel, Thank you for this fantastic and versatile design. I have made it with the left-overs from LB Thick and Quick, LB Hometown, Loops and Threads Cozy Wool and even used one strand of LB Homespun with one strand of coordinating worsted. The possibilities are endless! If I don't have enough super bulky of one color to make all, I use a coordinating color for the flower. Actually, my niece requested an orange headband with a purple flower...hmm. I made 27 red bands with purple flowers for my SIL's Red Hat group. I have closed the band after chaining 35 and do my dc in a ring because, well, I'm lazy. I change the flower out occasionally by ch 4 and sc in each st - if I have enough yarn.

DeleteThank you. Love the pattern and the result. I made Christmas gifts for my daughter and nieces. Once my daughter's friends saw they all wanted one as well. Since they are so quick and easy to make...no problem. I did make one alteration. I didn't sew the flower on to the headband. Instead I sewed a decorative button on the front connected to a large button on the back. This way the flower can be buttoned on to the headband or removed to be wore plain. In fact, for each headband I made two flowers, one the same color as the headband and one in a contrasting color. Lots of options!

Can someone tell me how many of these you can make with one skein of yarn? And I love this pattern! These are so fast to make and adorable!!! So easy too! I have never made something like this, only scarves and amigurumi so this is so cool!! Lol
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern! I worked the beginning a but different cause I hate chains. I made 34 double crochet foundation chains. It just combines the chain and double crochet into one stitch. I wrapped it around my head just to check the size and it feels like it could use another couple stitches. Could not get ends to meet. Does this stretch any as you work it our adding a few more stitches is maybe the way to go?

DeleteThe pattern above makes a pretty snug fitting headband as they are useless if they are too big. To solve your problem, try chaining more loosely to start with and try it around your head after one row of dc. If it is still too tight, undo and start with 1 or 2 more chains. Tip: make it more on the tight side because it will stretch.
